Dunbar
Dunbar is another one of the ancient Scottish towns that was forever changing hands between the English and the Scots, the harbours here being a valuable natural asset. Aside from the harbours you will find a wonderful expanse of beach which adds to the appeal of the town. This is an area of Scotland that has become synonymous with golf and once here you will not be short of golf courses to choose from, the majority of which offer the player stunning views out along the coast. It is claimed that the rocky outcrop which houses the remains of the castle here has been the sight of a fortification for the past 2,000 years; a fact that leads many people to believe that the town itself is equally as old.
Things to Do
Take a short drive out from Dunbar and you will find the National Museum of Flight. Here you can get vey hands on and have a go at flying an airship or complete their assault course. There are plenty of hands of activities here for the kids to get involved in and there is plenty of fun to be had both indoors and outdoors at the museum.
A visit to Gunsgreen House, a mansion house located not too far away in Eyemouth, will open your eyes to the dark world of smuggling. Here you can learn all about the different methods that the smugglers used and even crawl through the tunnels that they used to use. There is fun to be had by dressing up in period costume and by the end of it you could leave the house as a fully qualified smuggler.
John Muir Country Park is the place to go for a summer barbecue as the park has a number of authorised barbecue spots set up around it plus a children’s adventure style play area to keep them amused while dad takes charge of the cooking.
Places to Visit
Belhaven Bay is the perfect place to enjoy the beach. The location is popular with everyone from kite flyers to surfers. The waters here are perfect for swimming but visitors should bear in mind that this is very much an unspoiled area and as such there are limited amenities.
The East Links Family Park is a great place to spend time together as a family. Feed the animals or enjoy the train safari. Plus, there are pony rides to be had and plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some small furry mammals. Bigger kids will love the go-karting track and the toboggan run plus you also have the opportunity to get yourselves lost in the giant maze. There are other activities to enjoy too such as trampolining and soft play. It’s the perfect place to let the kids run off some of their energy.
As you explore around the local area you will discover that there are a number of nature reserves, riding schools and activity centres all aimed at providing a great day out and experience for your family.
